Installing CUDA on Ubuntu

I just spent two days trying to install CUDA on Ubuntu. I thought that the documentations make this appear much harder than it needs to be. The main thing in my experience is just that we need to be careful about the driver. Here are the steps I suggest: 1. Install an NVIDIA driver from the ppa:graphics_drivers/ppa. Ensure that the version of your OS is supported by the driver. This information is provided on the ppa website here . 2. Download the correct version of the CUDA runfile. Installing from the package manager did not work for me because it would install an unsupported version of the driver. When installing from the runfile, ensure that you do not install the driver that comes in the package. As long as the restricted driver you downloaded in step one is recent enough, CUDA will work. 3. Set the PATH and LD_LIBRARY_PATH environment variables. 4. After installing cuda, check if /dev/nvidia* files exist and ensure that you set the permissions so that non-root users can use ...

The Sentinel

For all practical purposes, since time immemorial, it had stood there. Far away but close enough. Unseen. It was a sentinel. An agent to watch over the young earthling race as it took its first steps. Waiting  … To announce humanity to the elder races when it was ready. And then ... Curiosity crushed it. ---------------------------- Note: Curiosity  is a Mars rover launched by NASA that recently landed on Mars. It is a nifty bit of technology.

Is the Indian Leadership Deaf-Dumb?

Image
This caricature was made on a gloomy morning when I found myself depressed thinking about India and its politics. I cannot fathom how the conscience of our leaders allows them to bicker endlessly while the country is falling apart . Notes: 1. The turbaned person is Dr Manmohan Singh and the bald speaker is L K Advani, representing India's Government and Opposition respectively.  2. Use of R K Laxman's Common Man:  I am not sure what the copyright lawyers have to say about this, but I could not think of a better person on wheel chair for this. The drawing is mine, the character belongs to R K Laxman , one of India's greatest Cartoonist.

And he found a KFC

Prakash was literally bursting with urgency. He realized he should have taken care of it before he got out of his house. But now was no time for regret. There was no mall around. He was in BBMP area. And that was when he found the KFC. Immediate.  Profound.  Relief ... He had found a lavatory. --  xxx -- 1. I first came across the concept of 55 word fiction from cmus who blogs here . And I wanted to write one myself. And this entry is what I wrote. 2. BBMP - Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagar Palike.

The Spirit

The following story was my entry for the 2012 Deccan Herald Short Story Contes t. I did not win it, though IMHO I should have ... :-) The last thing I remember from the time when I was alive is getting my throat ripped open by a pen. I remember being shocked. And then … I died. When I regained consciousness, my first reaction was one of bewilderment. I could not comprehend what I had become. And then it dawned to me. I had died. I realized I was now a spirit. A ghost. I do not feel like one though. At least not like the ones they depict in movies or books. There is no bright light I can walk into. I can not possess anyone. I can not rain fire or raise thunderstorms. I can not even walk through walls. I am like an invisible web. A net of thin tentacles made of air. Heat, humidity, even the slightest disturbance affects me. I do not have eyes or ears. I do not need them anymore. I can sense everything better than the time when I was alive. I can feel your heartbeat from w...

I want my Freedom!

I feel caged. We are all caged. In cages that are closed cells on a big blue ball. We have a cell called Somalia where millions die of starvation. While there is another called America, where millions die of obesity related maladies. There are cells where dictators like Gaddafi exist. There are cells where six million children die of hunger every year. And then there cells where millions and millions of tons of food rot in warehouses.

An “Auto” check on Sanity

It is like a mine field. Only the mines are in motion… Brownian motion! They are everywhere, rickety contraptions running on 3 wheels. The roads are rigged!!! Be scared. Very. Very. Scared.
