You remember ICL…? The league that started it all…
Well I don’t blame you if you don’t. It was a brillant idea concieved by the Zee TV people with Kapil Dev’s help to cash in on the cricket mania in this country. They got the concept right. The got everything right except that they forgot that they are dealing with the BCCI. The ICL guys had imagined that they will be received with open arms and given a loving hug by the BCCI. Instead what they got was a bear hug from the body. ICL is now tottering… The BCCI declared the poor league a rogue league… Banned players from playing in it… Kicked Kapil Dev from anything related to cricket in this country… Enforced the ban on players from other countries and the icing on the cake – they started their own IPL. The BCCI haas acted like a typical capitalist whom the Indian politicians like Sharad Pawar love to hate. It has destroyed the people who concieved the idea and then imitated the same and are now raking moolah like there is no tomorrow. This year ICL got a mediocre response at best.. I will be surprised even if it gets the same response the next year... What with all the big names in cricket going to IPL? And the money involved only increasing.. IPL now has become a heady cocktail of glitz, glamour and cricket... The kind of power and money the BCCI wields in matters related to cricket makes it imposssible for any one to beat it. With IPL it has only increased. Looks like the ICL is bound to die prematurely.
